What an ATS actually reads

Most “ATS-friendly” advice boils down to six things. CVPulse checks each of them when it scores your résumé.

  1. 01

    Readable text, not images

A system can only read text. Résumés exported as an image, or scanned, look blank to it. If you can't select the words in your PDF, neither can an ATS.

  2. 02

    Standard section headings

“Experience”, “Education”, “Skills” and “Projects” are what parsers look for. Creative headings like “Where I’ve been” can leave a section unrecognised.

  3. 03

    Contact details in the body

Put your email, phone and city in the main text near the top. Some systems skip headers and footers, so details placed there can disappear.

  4. 04

    Plain dates and titles

“Mar 2021 – Present” next to each job title lets the system work out your experience. Missing or unusual dates can make it look like a gap.

  5. 05

    The job’s own keywords

Recruiters search the ATS for skills and titles from the job post. If the post says “PostgreSQL” and you only wrote “databases”, that search won’t find you.

  6. 06

    Nothing hidden

White or tiny text stuffed with keywords is easy for screening systems to spot and is treated as manipulation. CVPulse flags it as an ATS red flag.

How the check works

  1. Upload your résumé. We read the text exactly as a screening system would, including anything hidden.
  2. You get a Hire-Score out of 100, one honest line about your résumé, and what’s working.
  3. Sign in free to see the specific fixes, then check it against a job description or let Deep Fix rewrite it.

Questions

Is this ATS resume checker free?

Yes. Upload a PDF or DOCX and you get your Hire-Score, a one-line verdict and your strengths without signing up. Signing in (free, no password) shows the specific fixes and saves the report.

What is an ATS?

An applicant tracking system is the software companies use to collect applications. It turns your résumé into text and fields, and recruiters search and filter those. If it can't read your résumé properly, a recruiter may never see it.

Is a two-column resume ATS-friendly?

Often, but not always: some systems read two columns out of order. A single-column layout is the safest choice. CVPulse’s templates each show an ATS rating so you can pick one that reads cleanly.

What’s a good ATS score?

There’s no universal ATS score: each company’s system is different. CVPulse gives a Hire-Score out of 100 for how a recruiter and an ATS are likely to read your résumé. 70 and above usually means it’s ready to send; under 50 means there are clear fixes to make first.

Should I upload a PDF or Word file?

Either works here. For applications, a text-based PDF keeps your layout; some company portals ask for Word instead, so follow what the job post says.

What happens to my resume?

It’s used only to score it and is never used to train AI models. If you don’t sign in, it’s deleted within 24 hours; if you do, it’s kept for 30 days and you can delete it any time from your account.
