How to write a résumé summary a recruiter actually reads
The top third of your résumé decides whether the rest gets read. A summary is the two or three lines that tell a recruiter who you are, what level you’re at, and what you’re aiming for.

What a good summary does
It answers three questions fast: what role you do or want, how much experience you have, and one piece of proof that you’re good at it.
In CVPulse’s rubric the top third is worth 25 of 100 points, because it’s all many recruiters read before deciding.
A simple formula
- Line 1: your title or target role and years of experience.
- Line 2: what you’re strongest at, in the job’s own words.
- Line 3 (optional): one result with a number, or what you’re looking for next.
Examples
- Before
Hardworking and passionate professional seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation.
AfterBackend engineer with 4 years in Java and Spring Boot, building payment APIs that handle 2M+ requests a day. Looking for a senior role on a platform team.
- Before
Fresher looking for an opportunity to learn and grow.
AfterB.Com 2026 graduate with a 6-month audit internship at a mid-size CA firm. Comfortable with Tally, GST returns and Excel reconciliations; aiming for an accounts executive role.
- Before
Results-driven marketing professional with excellent communication skills.
AfterPerformance marketer with 3 years running Google and Meta campaigns for D2C brands, managing ₹15 lakh a month at a 3.2× return on ad spend.
Mistakes to avoid
- Objective statements about what you want from the company, not what you offer.
- Buzzwords with nothing behind them: “results-driven”, “dynamic”, “synergy”, “go-getter”.
- Writing in the first person (“I am a…”). Drop the “I”.
- More than four lines. If it doesn’t fit in a glance, it won’t be read.
- The same summary for every job. Change the target role and the keywords to match each application.

Questions
Do freshers need a resume summary?
It helps. With little experience, two lines that name your degree, the role you want and your strongest project or internship give the recruiter a reason to keep reading.
Summary or objective?
A summary. An objective says what you want; a summary says what you bring. You can end the summary with the role you’re aiming for.
How long should a resume summary be?
Two to four lines, around 40 to 60 words.
